If you’ve studied up on our Fall Detection Add-on, you know that it comes with a button designed to detect falls. The fall detection button is exclusively available as a necklace – for a good reason. It uses an accelerometer and gyroscope inside the button to monitor your movement. The accelerometer measures acceleration, and the gyroscope tracks angular momentum. Based on the movement of this necklace, your system is able to detect if there is a change in acceleration or the angle and momentum of that button. This allows it to activate during significant changes (that resemble a fall) while not activating during other day-to-day movements.
Because of how it works, our fall detect button is not available as a wristband. If that button were placed on your wrist, it would be difficult to tell the difference between you dropping your arms to the side and a fall – which would make false alarms much more common. Those who prefer a wristband can purchase a standard wristband button. While it’s nice to have an extra standard button, it is important to note that it will not detect falls. In order to utilize the extra protection of fall detection, you must wear your fall detect necklace.
